Trefftz Difference Schemes on Fuzzy Stencils

چکیده

The recently developed Flexible Local Approximation MEthod (FLAME) produces accurate difference schemes by replacing the usual Taylor expansion with Trefftz functions – local solutions of the underlying differential equation. The paper introduces a significant extension of FLAME: a least-squares fit instead of the exact match of the approximate solution at the stencil nodes. As a consequence of that, FLAME schemes can now be generated on fuzzy stencils with the number of nodes substantially greater than the number of approximating functions. The accuracy of the method is preserved but its robustness is improved. For demonstration, the paper presents a number of numerical examples in 2D and 3D: electrostatic (magnetostatic) particle interactions, scattering of electromagnetic (acoustic) waves, and wave propagation in a photonic crystal. The examples explore the role of the grid and stencil size, of the number of approximating functions, and of the “fuzziness” of the stencils.

Electromagnetic Homogenization: the Uncertainty Principle and Its Numerical Verification

The effective permeability of electromagnetic metamaterials can deviate significantly from unity at high frequencies – an intriguing property not available in natural materials. However, we show both analytically and numerically that this artificial magnetism has limitations: the stronger the magnetic response, the less accurate the homogenization. New computational aspects of the paper include...

Numerical Simulation of a Lead-Acid Battery Discharge Process using a Developed Framework on Graphic Processing Units

In the present work, a framework is developed for implementation of finite difference schemes on Graphic Processing Units (GPU). The framework is developed using the CUDA language and C++ template meta-programming techniques. The framework is also applicable for other numerical methods which can be represented similar to finite difference schemes such as finite volume methods on structured grid...

On Finite Difference Schemes for the 3-d Wave Equation Using Non-cartesian Grids

In this paper, we investigate finite difference schemes for the 3-D wave equation using 27-point stencils on the cubic lattice, a 13-point stencil on the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, and a 9-point stencil on the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice. The tiling of the wavenumber space for nonCartesian grids is considered in order to analyse numerical dispersion. Schemes are compared for compu...

Stability of Finite Difference Schemes on Non-uniform Spatial-Time-Grids

A bstract. The three level operator finite difference schemes on nonuniform on time grids in llilbert spaces of finite dimension are consid ered. A priori estimates for uniform stability on the initial conditions are received under natural assumptions on operators and non uniform time grids. The results obtained here are applied to study stability o f the three levels weighted schemes of secon...

Uniformly best wavenumber approximations by spatial central difference operators

We construct accurate central difference stencils for problems involving high frequency waves or multi-frequency solutions over long time intervals with a relatively coarse spatial mesh, and with an easily obtained bound on the dispersion error. This is done by demonstrating that the problem of constructing central difference stencils that have minimal dispersion error in the infinity norm can ...
